Gearing up in Ramps and with engineering / gems

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Well if you check out Goldsong, you’ll see he is now level 64 and IMO well geared with stuff from ramparts, the engineering helm (now complete with meta gem – 10% shield block and 12 defense – and with enduring talasite – 4 defense 6 stamina), and the Sporeggar shield.

The rest of my gear has cheap gems from the guy in Thrallmar but since things like light-touched breastplate will be replaced long before my goggles, I decided to go cheap on their gems and spend on my meta gem in the helm.

It has been a busy couple days, pugging Ramps a few times, but I think I’ll see a difference when I go back into the BGs with my extra level and improved gear.

As for pugging ramps, it wasn’t too bad. I think part of that was because I was tanking. We had some funny hunters on one run – one dude explained his sucking by saying he was on a friend’s toon – the other dude’s bow broke before the final 2 bosses. We didn’t end up wiping until that stupid dragon and we had him down to 20% or so. Well there was the one time the feral druid decided to pull like 20 guys when no one was ready. A simple “I pull” solved that issue and then we didn’t wipe until the dragon at the end.

Anyway, I know from playing Gnometosser that you don’t need to be super skilled to dps as a hunter. And I’ve done enough healing on Goldsong to know it is 10 times easier than tanking. So being the tank makes it easier to PUG because if I keep aggro off the healer he’d have to be amazingly sucky not to heal me (though that did happen when I was pugging Zul Farrak way back). And the DPSers can shoot their arrows or whatever as long as they don’t go AFK or something.

Pretty soon I’ll be pugging Blood Furnace. I think with my upgraded gear (didn’t have the meta gem and some other things for Ramps) I am 100% ready. My talents are messed up – will probably respec when I go do my 64 training – then do Blood Furnace.

Do you bring news of victory? Losing in EOTS

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Well I was trying to get Goldsong his daily pvp, Eye of the Storm today. Horde got destroyed 3 times in a row in 60-69.

It felt like we were going up against premades – they had healers, dpsers, flag runners, defenders. In the last one our top healer had about 7,000 healing. They had one over 50k and one over 100k. We also had no one doing damage – I wonder what the hordies were all doing.

Anyway, 2 hours, 3 losses, time for work. At least I got fishing and cooking up to 140 or so each in between bgs…

I don’t really know what we were doing. We would control the 2 towers on our side. Then we would sometimes head to the middle and get our asses kicked. Since that wasn’t working we sometimes tried to take a 3rd tower where again we would get our asses kicked.

So each team would control 2 towers. But AF would own the middle and capture flags like crazy. Like we got zero and they grabbed it every reset.

We were just outplayed in every way. I remember one thing that pissed me off at the time and was somehow typical – a mage with rocket boots. He was camping our GY when a lock and I ressed. We quickly beat him down to 10% when he used his rocket boots to escape. I saw his health bar going up but I couldn’t get to him because he had gone through the middle where there were about 10 Alliance and zero Horde… Depressing. I need rocket boots…

Sunwell staging area pvp

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

Hey everyone, Jason here, blogger #2 for killing AF I guess. My toon is Hungryfreak and I recently went to the Sunwell staging area for the first time.

I don’t intend to instance or raid – I only play an hour or two a week now – just wanted to check out the environment and stuff. Once I saw the crazy Alliance gank squads in action I went seraching on Youtube and found this:

As for my experience, I was buffing up right outside the quest area amidst all the guards when a priest starts attacking me with shadowword pain and the like. Now I have 380 resilience (though I was carrying Gorehowl instead of my pvp sword so it would have been a little lower and 10,000 health so there was no real danger and the priest gave up. I would have gone out to meet him but he had a hunter friend waiting for me to do just that.

A few minutes later I was doing some of the Sunwell quests when I saw an AF rogue try to gank a Horde hunter. I enter the melee and the hunter dies and the rogue vanishes at about 10%. The hunter is a prick and whispers me why I didn’t heal him “Can I get a heal, jeez”. Because I’m not a healer douche. Why didn’t you trap him or wing clip him or something?

By the way, I am not one of those retnewbs that never heals. In a BG I like to be in the middle on the damage and healing charts – I heal until the AF attack me and then I mess them up. It’s just that in this case the hunter was getting whipped and my heals are fairly weak (no +healing) and I felt like cleaving the Gnome rogue’s face a bit.

Anyway, later I see the same rogue sitting over by the guards eating. I run over there and kill him before the guards get me. I whisper the hunter to let him know.

A few minutes later that same rogue and 2 friends (hunter, priest) are running around ganking individual hordies. I try to save one warrior but we both end up dead – we’re just outnumbered and not coordinated. He whispers “All you had to do was blessing of protection me”. Maybe but it’s too late to find out now.

I see on the local defense channel that there’s a 4 man gank squad on the road so that hordies can’t pass to turn in quests or whatever they do over there.

BY the time I gave up there were about 30 AF and 5 horde guys. Thought maybe it was a raid but there were several different Alliance guilds so I kind of doubt it. I just wonder if it’s fun to always have the advantage since AF only want to play when they outnumber Horde…

So in one hour I died twice (once the guards killed me and once the 3 man gank squad), completed 2 daily quests, killed a couple AF (that rogue and I ganked one or two others when I was able to catch them alone) and found 2 green 68 items. It was fairly fun but would have been better if the pvp action was a bit closer to even numbers on both horde and alliance.

Getting ganked by a ?? turns into a victory

Sunday, April 13th, 2008

One of my best pvp experiences so far:

A few weeks ago at level 35 Gnometosser is making the trek from TM to Hammerfall and I run by a 31 warrior near the Alliance base you pass on the way. He was very close to his base so I just kept going. A minute later I’m fighting a 37 ogre for a kill quest when a ?? human warrior named Smartypant comes up behind me. Smartypant attacks and his 31 friend is there to watch the show. Anyway, I ice trap Smartypant the ?? and attack the 31 (leaving my pet on the ogre which was probably an error – should have sent him after the 31). Anyway, when the 31 realizes he’s not just a spectator he uses intercept to get to melee. He should have run.

He reaches me at about half life. I pop deterrence and wait for counter attack to become available. I get range again and he is at 25% life. He starts running but he should have done that a long time ago. Ice trap breaks and the ?? starts beating on me but I kill the 31 with about 500 health left – 25%. I face the ?? but of course don’t last much longer.

I think I won this encounter and it was certainly the best time I’ve ever had getting ganked by a ??. But after I die Smartypant starts doing his emotes: “no way; ain’t gonna happen” etc. I don’t know because I can’t see the world through Alliance eyes, but did he think he won? I mean a ?? should be able to keep his friend alive when they go ganking together, right?

IMO smartypant is full of fail although he may be proud of it…
