Priest leveling in BGs from 70-80 gear decisions

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

A lot has changed in WoW and I now get xp for BGs and the BG daily quest. I like BGs much more than questing so it’s safe to say I’ll be doing some of this as I take my priest from 70-80.

Now my priest, Bakayoko, is funny. I’m a shadowweave tailor and was shadow in TBC when we were the awesome mana batteries everyone loved. So I’m pretty much all purple with the frozen shadoweave and spellstrike tailoring stuff.

My gloves, wrists, back, and belt (plus my staff) were blue though. The back I replaced with a 70 pvp epic Volanthius shroud.

Now I have to buy more pvp gear as I level up because I don’t want to hit the 75K honor cap. The question is when do I stop buying 70 pvp epics and start stocking up on items for level 80?

I don’t plan on hitting 80 all that soon so there may be upgrades in the gear I buy. I might buy something for honor points now only to find when I’m higher level that there’s a better one available.

I’ll also be able to craft the frostsavage pvp starter set (can’t wait to wear that in the 70-79 bracket at level 78 and kick some ass) – maybe I should be a 78-79 twink without the xp cap since it will take forever to level up doing a couple bgs a day anyway.

So my plan is to buy a few more 70 pvp items – belt might be next. But eventually I’ll do the 108 resilience medallion of the horde, another trinket, necklaces, and rings. And save up for level 80.

Death forge questing – tough but nice drops

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Hey Jason here. I don’t play much these days, but I did take a few hours recently to do some Death Forge quests. They were yellow to me but I hope they are red to anyone who’s not a pretty well geared 70 because I died twice trying to take Hungryfreak through.

I’m not complaining though. I went in there twice. The first time I completed a kill quest for 11 gold, picked up 2 greens, 2 fel armaments, 3 marks of sargeras. Plus there is some nightmare vine, adamantite, and fel iron to be found around Shadowmoon. Oh and 2 stacks of netherweave plus all mobs drop silver.

The second time I was did kargosh and the summoning chamber for 11 gold a piece. While doing them I also found Ced’s carver, 2 of lunacy, a couple of greens, 3 stacks of netherweave, and about 25 marks of sargeras. At first I thought the lunacy card was a very lucky drop, but that deck seems to be one of the least desired…

But depending on what I get for the carver and the lunacy card (and the 4 greens which I’ll prolly have disenchated and the fel armaments) I’d say I easily made over 100 gold per hour and it was more fun / challenging than grinding or just herbing and mining.

But unless you’re 70 with decent gear or in a group I wouldn’t do these quests. I had a 10 gold repair bill (died twice), burned 5 or so healing pots (though I picked up a few more), burned a fel blossom, etc.

Pugged Blood Furnace today

I was on Goldsong – dinged 65 before the last boss. Then we had a 61 priest healing, a 64 elemental shammy, a 61 fire mage, and a 61 fury warrior. We got through with no wipes although I think everyone died at some point besides me.

I found it far more difficult to keep aggro here then I did in Ramparts. Even with salvation the fire mage pulled aggro several times and needed a few blessings of protection from me. One time he ice blocked. A couple times he died.

Also making things difficult was the pace – the other 4 guys were going too fast for me. The warrior would mark and then pull unless I was real fast. A couple times he pulled while I was drinking. It didn’t matter too much on the trash but still it made things tougher. On the bosses we went nice and slow.

One of the toughest parts was before the second boss where you get 5 or so waves of 3 each. We decided to do zero crowd control to be efficient and I didn’t know which direction the next group would come from. Plus I should have been further from the rest of the group then I was.

During that stretch they told me to use consecration earlier. One thing I need to do better is keep consecration and holy shield up while still judging as often as possible. When I feel rushed like I did with those waves I forget to press buttons sometimes… Of course they could have just held off on the dps slightly longer…

I also had trouble on that boss with aggro because he ran into everyone else first (the other guys were closer to him when he came out of his little room). Plus he was kind of floating so I got several “you are facing the wrong way” messages.

Nothing dropped for me, a couple of mail items and a healing trinket did. I wanted the healing trinket for my healing set but the mage said he needed it for his main set – it had like 20 spell damage…

Hard to find good world pvp in Stranglethorn

Monday, April 21st, 2008

So I took Gnometosser to STV today at 43. I wanted to kill my shadowmaw panthers and stuff before I got too high level to make it worthwhile.

So I go to pick up my quests and a 39 druid takes me by surprise and kills me. Good job even if you do have stupid name Nelfdruid. Basically I was unable to get range and even when up close forgot to use deterrence / counterattack. And I clicked fire trap instead of freezing trap. So I got my butt kicked by a guy 4 levels lower than me.

It was a learning experience. My first World PVP in STV today was good even if I lost.

The next 10 or so were not so good. A 70 druid ganked me at Nesingwary’s. Nelfdruid teamed up with a 70 pally, Xtemplar. They ganked me a bunch of times. At Nesingwary’s at when I was killing Shadowmaws. Apparently Arena is not Xtemplar’s thing (even I know 1400-1500 ratings are nothing special) but ganking lowbies is something he can succeed at.

I also got ganked by a 70 rogue (another guy with 1400 ratings) and a 70 hunter (same bad ratings).

I wonder – do all Alliance punks who fail at arena come to STV to gank lowbies and feel better about their lack of skill?

Anyway, at the very end I found a 40 hunter. Close enough so I attack from my mount, without my pet. I put him to sleep with serpent sting, cast scare pet, summon my pet, and attack. I guess I was rushing things and not paying attention because he feigns death, gets up close, catches me in a freeze trap (only lasted a few seconds), and wtfpwned me in a shooting match. Well I had him down to about 20%. I didn’t lay down a trap – my mistake.

I res and he’s nearby so this time I am ready and things go much better for me. I didn’t scare pet or lay down a trap but I was ready for feign death, got him retargeted, and destroyed him. He had me down to about 600 out of 2600 health.

Another good world pvp experience because it was an even match that taught me how to improve my play. So my first and last were good experiences. But getting ganked by 70s 10 or so times in between was not real fun. I guess I don’t understand how it’s fun for the 70s but they kept ganking me over and over so I guess they enjoyed it – must be an Alliance thing.
